Haunted Costumes for a Haunted Halloween
I've always been into creepy, scary costumes - the more sickening the better to celebrate Halloween with. Many people have come to expect horrifying costumes from me and Justin and we don't like to disappoint. The longer we've been married, however, the simpler are costumes have become and (sadly) the more fun instead of scary.
Gothic (2011)
This costume was easy to put together and simple for a night out as "someone else". Girls: just wear thicker makeup up. Boys: wear any makeup, spike your hair, and add a dog collar. Add any black clothing you own and BAM! Gothic.
After dressing up as "Goth", Justin and I headed to El Mex Sal in Provo for a bit to eat and then went to Harmon's to grab a RedBox movie. As we waited in line to get the movie, another shopper came to us and asked, "I hope that is a costume! If not, I still love you, but I hope it is." Obviously we looked legit.
Struck by Lightning (2014)
In 2014, Justin and I weren't planning on dressing up at all (sad realization!). We'd lived in Charlottesville for only a couple of months in some ghetto apartments that no one was going to come trick or treating at. We also didn't have anywhere to go.
The day before Halloween we decided to go to a Halloween party and not let a chance to dress up pass us by. We came up with this very simple and easy to put together costume (thanks to Pinterest) the day of the party.
With a quick stop to the dollar store and Goodwill, we purchased gold and silver poster board to cut out lightning bolts for Justin, some super awesome sunglasses for him, and an umbrella we could shred. We tore holes in one of Justin's old church shirts and singed the edges to give it a crisp look and added some smudging all over my face.
This was inexpensive, super fast to make, and easy to put on and clean off.
Now that we have a baby girl, she (of course) will be included in all of our costume mania even this year. No matter how intense our costumes have been, we've never purchased costumes. What a waste. Everything we've done has been piecemealed together in order to keep us in our small budget.
Take a look at some creepy (and not so creepy) costumes that have made our Halloweens extra haunted and memorable. Maybe you'll find some inspiration for your own costume this year.
Zipper Face (2011)
The "Zipper Face" idea came from Reddit.com in 2011 and almost won me the "Scariest Costume" prize at a Halloween Party. The costume was fun to put together, albeit a little intense (and messy if you're going to try and eat a lot). I attached a zipper to my face using face wax and concealer, which you can get at any Halloween/Costume makeup store. I filled in around my mouth with fake blood. It was a bit tricky getting the zipper to stay in place around the curves of my face, but even though it got a little messy, it just made it look that much more disgusting.

Murderous Clown (2011)
The Murderous Clown did win the "Overall Best Costume" award at the Halloween party in 2011. This costume is very easy to make as you just pull together all of the mismatched clothing you own. Add a clown wig, some balloons and extreme makeup and you have yourself the most horrifying jolly clown ever. We painted Justin's face with white concealer found at any Halloween/Costume makeup store. We also used black concealer face paint around his eyes before painting dark green triangles above and below his eyes. We added angry eyebrows, pink cheeks and bright red lipstick with a little trickle of blood.

Voodoo Doll (2011)
This costume was, in part, inspired by the horror movie "The Strangers" along with Kristy's own creepy imagination. This costume won the "Scariest Costume" award - let's be honest, if that hovered over you in the middle of the night you'd probably wet the bed.
Kristy made the dress out of burlap fabric, although a burlap sack would work well, too. She rubbed the burlap against the cement to tear ragged holes which she then lit on fire to singe the edges. She used twine to wind up a voodoo doll which dangled from her waist. Her makeup was all regular makeup - dark eye shadow and eyeliner - found in her bathroom. She used black concealer face paint to paint around her eyes.

Serial Killer & His Victim (2013)
This costume was so fun to make and comfortable enough to wear all night long at a Halloween Party. Justin was a serial killer - complete with the slick, comb over hair and shirt buttoned up to his throat. I was his victim, handcuffed to him throughout the night. Basically I wore pajamas (comfy!) and the costumes were sold by how we acted - sluffing through the house, dragging one foot behind, Justin standing ramrod straight with a creepy look in his eye.
We used white concealer to make us both pale, black eye shadow for the bags under Justin's eyes, mascara that I splashed with water to create the tear streaks, and tattoos of cuts on my neck and arms. The costumes were a success... almost too much so. The tattoos did not come off easily like they were supposed to and left me with red marks where they'd been. That was fun to explain at church the next day :P

S'mores (2016)
This has been my absolute favorite costume, by far! We kept it tasteful (not horrifying) because it was for our church's trunk-or-treat and we didn't want to scare the little kids away. Plus we LOVE S'mores!
We purchased some white sweats at Goodwill and stuffed the sweatshirt with a pillow to give Justin that ooey-gooey marshmallow look. He also wore white socks with old lady white slippers and a white beanie. We also added some melted chocolate chips to his cheeks (which everyone died over). I wore all brown and made a "Hershey's" label with tinfoil and brown paper. We then made graham crackers to add to our back using some leftover cardboard we'd had at home and some string. Carrying real marshmallow roasters was just the finishing touch.

This year, with Evie barely being 3 months old by the time Halloween arrives, she will be the center of our costume. Evie is going to be a black widow spider in her nest of webs. Justin and I are going to be bugs caught in her web...
We're keeping it simple and cute these days :)
