Celebrate Twenty-Eight in Style

Happy 28th Birthday!

Justin turned 28 years old this year! It's crazy how fast time flies. I used to think it was crazy that my parents and siblings would forget about their birthdays or even forget how old they were... well, we are approaching that territory.

Until then, celebrating birthdays are one of my absolute favorite things to do! You get to spend an entire day (or in my case spread it into an entire week) doting on someone doing everything in your power to make them feel special.

Unfortunately, Justin's birthday was on a weekday this year and he had to work so most of our festivities were at night time.

Here's what we did to celebrate hubby's 28th birthday this year:

Stud Muffin Breakfast
I wanted breakfast to be a little more special than the oatmeal or whole grain cereal we typicall eat. So I bought some delicious blueberry muffins for my "stud-muffin".

Along with muffins, I also made us our favorite Orange, Banana, Mango smoothies. (Recipe from Greatist.com). When Justin came down the stairs ready for work, I had one muffin out with a candle on it for his first birthday wish! Who says you only get one wish a year?

Balloon Scavenger Hunt
You're never too old to have fun making a gigantic mess - especially when you're not the one that has to clean it up.

Justin got home from work to a sign on the garage door hinting at what awaited for him inside. He took the tac from the sign and put on his birthday hat.

And then the fun began! Each balloon was filled with as much confetti as I could possibly fit in it. Justin figured balloon + tac = popping party and he went crazy, confetti exploding all over the house. Until he got to one very special balloon hanging at the back of the room. When it burst, a piece of paper flew out of it along with the expected explosion of sparkles.

And the scavenger hunt for his gift began. Ten clues hid around our house and Justin ran up and down stairs, in and back outside again until he finally found his gift in our dryer.

Clue #1: Find clue number 2 in the room that's brand new, It'll be hanging around the seahorse in town
Clue #2: Clue number 3 is as tired as can be. You'll find it asleep in Lucy's glamorous retreat!
Clue #3: Avoiding a bore, you'll find clue number four. What show will it be watching behind the big screen?
Clue #4: Clue number 5 is in the favorite place of your wife, Clinging like glue to the bottom of her favorite shoe
Clue #5: Clue number 6 gets its kicks diving in garbage galore near a large metal door.
Clue #6: Unfortunate enough number 7 died and went to heaven. But of all the luck, its body got stuck on the gate by our favorite play mate.
Clue #7: Clue number 8 is lying in wait where we make the treat that gets Evie to kick her feet (Pop, pop, pop!)
Clue #8: Clue number 9 is just a bit behind, he's taking a snooze  in another balloon.
Clue #9: Find clue number 10 and this game will end! Just travel the hall at a slow paced crawl and look where we dry the things that used to be our pigsty.

His gift was simple but made special because of the balloon popping mess that he got to create.

You Are Special Today Dinner
Justin got to pick a meal that he wanted for dinner without any of the pressure to help cook or clean up. He picked steak and shrimp, which really was a treat for the both of us.

I made an Applebee's Copycat Shrimp and Parmesan Steak  with sauteed yellow squash and zucchini along with Parmesan Garlic Crescent Rolls. It was amazing and Justin "mm"ed the whole way through the meal. Plus he got to blow out another candle and make another birthday wish.

Birthday Cake
Justin always requests a lemon cake for his birthday. The past four years it's been one very specific lemon cake that my mom makes. This year, although we stuck with lemon, tried out a new recipe: Lemon Cream Cake

The cake was a little dense, but delicious. I think if I'd used pastry flour instead of white flour it may have helped. The only changes I made to the recipe was I used lemon fruit filling in place of the lemon curd. I also used this same lemon filling as a replacement for the required Limoncello (since I don't know what that is) and spread it underneath the frosting of each cake.

Overall it was a very fun birthday with lots of surprises and things to help hubby feel special today despite having to go to work.

I've already started coming up with ideas for next year though! Any ideas that the men in your life have loved?
